Correspondence, legal documents, and notes from 1833-1867 (bulk 1863-1864) concerned with matters of Mexican politics and government, most significantly legislation of the period known as the Reforma. The early material is comprised almost exclusively of incoming letters, among which the primary correspondent is Octaviano Muñoz Ledo, whose letters date from 1851 to 1852; many of them involve the purchase of a library for a school in Guanajuato. There are also many letters from Manuel González Cosío, governor of Zacatecas, pertaining to the Reform, the constitution, and elections. Among the later correspondents, the largest contributor is Pelagio Antonio de Labastida y Dávalos, Archibishop of Mexico, whose letters concern the Catholic Church's fight (with backing from the conservative party) against reform legislation. Matters of foreign relations, especially during the reign of Maximilian, are also discussed, mostly in letters from Juan Nepomuceno Almonte. Lares' conflict with Achille François Bazaine over the continuation of Maximilian's government is well documented in much of the later correspondence. Legal documents include laws and decrees drawn up and proposed by Lares and others. Drafts of legislation and correspondence, and other assorted notes, are also present.
